Osso VR

Olivia is a member of the Medical Technology department at Osso VR. She works with clients and subject matter experts (SMEs) to design clinically accurate surgical simulations in virtual reality.

OSSO VR PRODUCT DEMO

This video shows the kind of work created by Osso VR. Owing to legal obligations, client-specific information cannot be publicly shared. However, this demo video is an example of the work Olivia is involved in daily. Specifically, she is involved in tasks such as:

  • User experience design

  • Unity game engine development

  • Client communication

  • Project management

CASE STUDY: Bunion Surgery

Olivia was the project lead on a bunion surgery module for one of Osso’s clients. A significant aspect of the role involves meticulously planning step-by-step how the surgical module looks and behaves in virtual reality (VR) and effectively conveying this vision across various teams, including Art and Engineering, among others to ensure the seamless creation of the end product. It is also important to confirm the plan with the client before executing the project plan.

Research

The first step in any project is to start with a solid understanding of the concept. This meant researching the procedure using the clients’ technique guide, as well as other reputable sources.

Interaction Planning

Next, Olivia had to break down complex surgical technique guides into simple steps that translate into interactions in Unity game engine

  • For example:

    • If the surgical manual said something like: “Next, retrieve the pre-drill for a 2mm Screw and drill across both cortices of both the first and second metacarpal”.

    • This step would be translated to something that can be translated into VR like:

      • User picks up surgical drill

      • User positions surgical drill [in the correct spot]

      • User moves surgical drill along axis [while holding trigger button]

      • User moves surgical drill along reverse axis

      • User disconnects surgical drill

Storyboarding

It is also important to communicate art asset and animation needs with the Art department. The team utilized visual Storyboards to easily communicate need with the art team and served as a bouncing off point for discussions.

The following are some screenshots of the storyboard:

Development

Finally, after the client has signed off on all plans, the development phase begins and Olivia can implement the design using Unity game engine to create the surgical simulation.

Module Delivery

After the module undergoes rigorous testing by the QA department, it is delivered to the client.

The below video shows one chapter of the module. The 3D models have been heavily edited to remove all client specific tools and replaced with basic shapes such as cubes and cylinders.

SKILLSET EXPANDED

User Experience Design:

  • Consult with surgeons and SMEs to create clinically realistic modules and enhance user experiences in VR simulations

  • Design simulations to optimize educational impact

Unity Game Engine Development:

  • Utilize Unity game engine software to translate surgical technique guides into interactive user experiences

  • Use custom scripting to assign events and animations to specific interactions

  • Collaborate closely with Unity Developers and Engineers to address challenges, introduce new features, and enhance performance

Client Communication:

  • Act as the primary liaison for clients when discussing clinical, educational, and technical aspects of projects

  • Conduct biweekly client reviews to provide updates on project progress and ensure alignment and clarity

  • Assess workload and scope changes in response to client feedback and requests

Project Management:

  • Work with Team Lead, Program Manager, and other internal project stakeholders to accurately estimate projects spanning 9 months

  • Coordinate communication across departments to ensure seamless exchange of internal and external feedback
